Do You Really Need a Coach?

Coaching – Do You Really Need It?

coaching

The short answer is probably. Everyone could use coaching in their life. The long answer is way more complicated.

I’ve been at this online business stuff now for almost 10 months and during the Journey I’ve been hearing a lot about coaches.  I hear comments like these from everybody in the business – “You need to have a coach”, or “Don’t you have a coach?” or “Everyone needs a coach, even the gurus”.  That’s what everybody says.

But do you really need a coach? I think most people do, but there are some inherent problems with getting a coach and more importantly, getting the right coach:

  • Most coaches cost money. So if you are on a tight budget, this could be a problem.
  • Coaches are like therapists. You have to “connect” with a coach in order for the relationship to be successful and motivate you to make changes and take action.
  • Finding the right coach can be difficult and you might ask yourself why can ‘t I just use my own ideas rather than going along with a coach I don’t resonate or agree with.
  • Most coaches are not 100% accessible nor are they around 24/7 to answer your questions or give you advice.  Most likely, they are available by appointment only.
Get Clarity

Here are some ways to gain clarity before choosing a mentor, coach or leader to follow taken taken from this article … http://stopworkplacedrama.com/how-to-chose-your-mentors-coaches-and-teachers-wisely/#comment-4140 :

1. What area of expertise does this person have that I want to learn about?
2. What values does this person exhibit that are congruent with mine?
3. What values does this individual exhibit that are out of alignment with my values?
4.  Do I have a need for this person to be perfect?
5.  Am I strong enough to learn from someone that may not have the same values as I do?
6.  Can I look through the proper filters to learn what I need to learn?
7. What are my real objectives for working with or learning from this person?

We all know what we need to do to get moving on a project or accomplishing a goal. Sometimes it procrastination the holds us back, sometimes its resources, sometimes it’s lack of an action plane, etc.   There are lots of things that prevent us from moving forward and accomplishing. Coaches can help motivate and inspire. They can help  put a plan together and be accountable.

What to do in the interim?

So while you are deciding about coaching or looking for the right one, here are some things you can do in the interim:

  • You can get free coaching tips out there on the Internet that will guide you – just do a google and/or YouTube search on the subject. Many of the results will be free advice.
  • You can implement the tips from those articles that resonate with you
  • You can create your own structure and guidelines on what you need from coaching and  where to get …basically put together a workable plan for you about coaching.
  • Generate  a running list of ideas that you can go back to and implement those ideas
  • Find and read motivational and inspirational quotes and articles and watch motivational and inspirational videos.

The bottom line is everyone can benefit from having a coach. So begin the process of finding one who works for you, and begin to implement your own coaching process  until that right person comes along, that person who will help you get to the next level.

    1. Hey Joan, thanks for your comment. It is important to have help from someone who knows, but in my opinion it can’t just be anyone, it has to be someone you resonate with. Do you have a coach?
